As the Department of Posts plans to provide e-enabled services in all post offices across the country, the telegram would probably become history.
As per the department's pilot project Arrow, 200 post offices across the country will be upgraded to offer e-enabled services.
This initiative is taken so that it acts as a window to the world for people in rural areas, S K Chakrabarti, Chief Postmaster General of North East Circle, said.
E-enabled services like e-post, Western Union Money Order and Instant Money Order will be extended to posts offices in rural areas.
Out of the 1.55 lakh post-offices in the country, 1.38 lakh are in rural areas which serve 80 percent of the rural population.
Broadband facilities will be provided by BSNL to all post-offices gradually.
"In many places the telegram has already become redundant," said Chakrabarti.
