KARACHI: Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri, Adam Gilchrist and Wasim Akram have been chosen as ambassadors to promote cricket in China.
China has been designated as a 'Special Project' by the Asian Cricket Council as well as International Cricket Council.
"Ashraful Haq (ACC chief executive) spoke to Gavaskar and Shastri during the CB series in Australia and they have agreed," an ACC spokesperson confirmed to MiD DAY yesterday.
China is keen on promoting cricket since it has been included in the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou. Cricket is currently played in 198 schools in China.
As hosts, China qualify automatically for the event. Its 1.5 billion population means it has huge revenue potential. "Global revenues for cricket will increase by 30-40% in my estimation once China becomes an established cricketing nation, either as a venue, a participant or a breeding ground for future cricketers in the decades ahead," said Ashraful Haq.
