Her marriage to Mairaj Rehman was dissolved and the divorce was accepted according to the Muslim law | The Bandra Metropolitan Court has asked the police to translate Sanjay Dutt’s wife Maanayata’s divorce certificate and documents from Urdu to Hindi.
Meanwhile, her former husband Mairaj Rehman has appealed in court that he never divorced Maanayata aka Dilnawaaz Sheikh. Rehman is in judicial custody at Arthur Road Jail since the last three months for calling and sending lewd messages to 32 Bollywood actresses.
Investigating officer Sanjay Patil had submitted the 20-page dossier of Maanayata’s divorce-related documents obtained from Oshiwara-based Maulana Abdul Hassan Rahi Qazi along with her statements to the court. The magistrate returned them, ordering for a Hindi translation and set March 10 as its submission date.
DCP Vinay K Chaubey (zone nine) confirmed that documents have to be translated, but refused to comment further. The Bandra police had recorded Maanayata’s and the maulana’s statements on February 20. A police source said the cops had asked her a few questions and she had cooperated by providing the cops the talaknaama filed by the maulana.
The maulana in his statement confirmed the divorce and handed copies of three divorce notices (in Urdu) sent to Mairaj on October 18, October 25 and November 7, 2003, but he had not responded to them. The maulana submitted the article published in Urdu paper Inquilab, which stated that Maanayata wanted a divorce and Mairaj should appear before the maulana on November 18, 2003. Since Mairaj failed to appear, their marriage was dissolved and the divorce was accepted according to the Muslim law. Maanayata’s statements Cops: Have you divorced Mairaj? Maanayata said she divorced Mairaj in November 2003 and produced the divorce documents. She stated Mairaj physically abused her and stole her jewellery as the reason of divorce.
Cops: Have you given birth to Mairaj’s child? Mairaj in his application to the magistrate had mentioned that Maanayata gave birth to his child in Dubai and asked for his custody.
Maanayata denied having a child and accused Mairaj of tarnishing her reputation with false allegations. | |
