For more than three years, Adnan Sami has been trying to get Indian citizenship. The singer, a Pakistani national, owns a house in Mumbai, holds a PAN card and has now even applied for the registration of his marriage at the marriage registrar’s office in Bandra, proving how much he wants to be a part of India.

Adnan (37) married Dubai-based Sabah Galadari (32) at Jama Masjid, Bandra, in April last year and applied for the marriage registration in October 2007.

But, according to court sources, the registration is yet to come by. For an Indian, this process normally takes no more than a month.

Adnan, through his PR executive, confirmed that he had applied for the registration, but he said the formalities had been completed.  However, when asked about the date of the registration, there was no response from the singer.

This is Adnan’s re-marriage with Sabah.

The couple had married in September 2001 and separated in April 2004 after completing divorce procedures in Dubai. Before Sabah, Adnan was married to Pakistani actress Zeba Bakhtiar.

Meanwhile, Adnan’s struggle for Indian citizenship continues. Initially, he got a positive response to his November 2003 application after two senior BJP leaders pushed his case with the home ministry.

He even issued a notice in a newspaper in April 2005 declaring his intentions for choosing Indian citizenship (which is a required procedure.)

However, Adnan’s application is still pending because of strong objections from the Intelligence Bureau. A senior IB officer, who did not wish to be named, said, “IB is very sensitive about granting citizenship to Pak nationals, as Pakistan is considered an enemy country.”
