Think twice before you travel ticketless on Central Railway (CR) ever again. Starting this month, the CR has intensified its fortress checks at major stations to close all avenues of escape for such travellers. During these checks, CR employs a large number of ticket checkers (TCs) at each exit point of the station simultaneously and without prior announcement.

In stations that have heavy traffic and multiple exit points as many as 100 TCs are deployed for this kind of massive checking.

The latest fortress checks were carried out at CST on March 10 and 13. They will soon be conducted at other major stations such as Dadar, Kurla, Thane and Kalyan as well.

Senior officials of CR’s commercial department recently decided to intensify the fortress checks by using numbers and the element of surprise to nab ticket less travellers. “On a given day, even if a few TCs are positioned at platforms, ticketless commuters still have ways of escaping.

There is a limit to the number of passengers a few TCs can check, as the movement of passengers cannot be slowed or blocked for the purpose. Besides, all the exit points are not covered by TCs under normal circumstances,” said a railway official.
