Policeman accidentally shot by colleague during lunch break at PMO gate

Probe begins: An investigation team inspects the site near the Prime Minister’s Office at South Block, after a firing incident in which a police constable was accidentally shot by his colleague

A commando posted outside the high security Prime Minister's Office was accidentally shot by his colleague. The incident occurred at around 12.05 pm when Suraj Pal, a Delhi police head contstable accidentally fired a shot while showing his service revolver to Sanjeev Kumar, a Delhi Police commando from the 2nd battalion.

Sanjeev, 29, suffered bullet injury in his left thigh. He was rushed to the Ram Manohar Lohia hospital where his condition was stated to be stable after an operation, which lasted for nearly two hours.  

The two were posted in the PCR van outside the PMO and the service revolver 0.38 bore belonged to Suraj Pal. The police have termed the incident "an accident and mishandling of weapon".

Negligence

"A case of negligence in handling of weapon has been registered. The accused has been arrested and booked under section 337 of the Indian Penal Code. We are still investigating the case.  So far our investig- ations have revealed that they were on good terms and there was no dispute," said a police official.  

Panic

Panic gripped the entire high security zone soon after the incident. PMO officials were concerned over the freak accident. The area was cordoned off after the incident.
