The Economic Offences Wing will now take on only those fraud cases that involve Rs 50 lakh and more; smaller cases will be sent to local police stations

The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) will now probe only those cases of fraud that amount to Rs 50 lakh and more, with special emphasis on those involving larger public money.

EOW currently investigates complicated white-collar crimes like frauds in banking and medical fields, job racketing, shares and bogus stamp cases, involving monetary loss of Rs 25 lakh and above. “But with an increase in economic offences cases, it was important to filter them for quality investigation and to conviction,” said a police officer attached to the department. A senior police officer added that all the applications pertaining to cases below Rs 50 lakh would be marked to the local police stations.

JCP (crime) Rakesh Maria confirmed the development, “EOW is supposed to handle larger scams and cases involving public interest.”

Some EOW cases

- The EOW recently found Jagmohan Dalmiya guilty of misappropriation of BCCI funds to the tune of Rs 2.9 crore.

- Kingfisher Airlines complained to the EOW about an online ticket booking fraud through credit cards and stated that they were duped to the tune of Rs 17 crore.

EOW sleuths arrested the people involved.
