Mumbai: The 5.6-km Bandra-Worli sea-link may be commissioned by January 2009, Maharashtra Minister for Public Undertakings Anil Deshmukh said here on Friday.

At a press conference after the site visit, Deshmukh said 78 per cent of the work was complete and experts described the bridge as an engineering marvel.

“It will be a landmark structure in the city, after the Gateway of India. The bridge supports eight traffic lanes, including two lanes reserved for buses. The cable stay bridge (south-bound) at Bandra is nearly complete,” he added.

Mahim Causeway is the only link to connect the island city with the western suburbs and the seven-km stretch has seen congestion of vehicles over the years during peak hours.

The sea-link will alleviate traffic congestion in the Mahim-Dadar-Worli areas, besides providing relief at Mahim Causeway.

The sea link begins at the Mahim interchange (junction of the Western Expressway with SV Road) at the Northern end and joins Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road on Worli sea-face at the southern end.

The bridge will cover the seven-km stretch in seven minutes, he added.
