Adding wood to the fire

Mumbai:

Fire fighters struggled overnight to douse the fire that broke out around eight timber shops on SV road, between Andheri and Jogeshwari. The fire, which started at 10.40 pm, caused a loss of crores of rupees.

At the time of going to press, the  fire had still not been doused.

Jehangir Mohammed, an eyewitness, said that the fire brigade took time for them to reach the spot. "Had the fire engines come on time, the damage could have been lesser. It took more than an hour for the  engines to reach the spot," added another eyewitness.

A V Sawant, chief fire officer, said, "The cause of  the fire is still unknown. Twelve fire engines and nine tankers have been used. No casualties have been reported."

Siddique Suleman Chabra, a shopowner, rushed to his shop when he heard the news, but it was too late. "My shop burned before my eyes, but I was helpless. All my life's earnings have been lost. We have lost crores of rupees," said Chabra.

Even Western Railways (WR) had to bear the consequences. The spot where the fire broke out is around five metres away from the Andheri railway track.

The fire damaged four local trains and the railways had to block track one and two. "The damages are not severe and would be repaired in the yard," said a railway official.
