India in trouble at 43/3

By: Amol Karhadkar

On a dry wicket that offered inconsistent bounce right from the first over, India had their backs to the wall in the second ODI at the Maharani Usharaje Trust Ground today.

After Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat, Stuart Broad broke the back of the Indian top-order with three early scalps. At the 10-over mark, India were stuttering at 43 for three, with Gautam Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh at the crease on 19 and 10, respectively.

Broad, who conceded 74 runs without a wicket off his 10 overs three days ago in Rajkot, came back brilliantly and tasted success with his second ball. Virender Sehwag (1) played a good-length delivery by the lanky bowler on to his stumps to give England an early breakthrough.

In came Suresh Raina (4). But even before he had his eye in, he tried to flick one, top-edged at and scooped it to Samit Patel at square leg.

Rohit Sharma (3) was promoted ahead of Yuvraj to keep the left and right-hand combination going. But despite getting a reprieve from glovesman Matt Prior early on, the Mumbai batsman failed to make it count. He went for a hook off a short delivery in the eighth over, and Owais Shah did the rest, running a couple of steps from short mid-wicket.

At the 10-over mark, Broad's figures read 5-0-14-3.
