If you think you can defy traffic rules and get away by whacking the traffic cop who dares to stop you, then you are certainly mistaken.

Rattled by the spate of attacks on traffic cops, the Pune police have now decided to go harsh on such offenders.

And to make their message go loud and clear to those who indulge in such crime, the Pune police had arrested Manas Khen, a software engineer, last month for assaulting a traffic cop and made him manage the traffic at Vetalbaba Chowk on Senapati Bapat Road for two hours in the morning, for five days. Besides, Khen was made to work with the cop he had whacked.

Changing stands

"As we believe in being polite, people tend to take undue advantage of it. Thus, we have decided to go harsh on those who think that they are above the law," said, Dr Satyapal Singh, the commissioner of police, in an informal chat with the editors of the newspapers to get views on various problems in city.

Dr Singh said this in wake of increasing attacks on the traffic cops.

In the last three months, the unruly drivers who were stopped for their negligent driving and other traffic related offences assaulted 47 traffic cops while on duty.

Not enough

Moreover, Dr Singh added that the practice of imposing a fine of Rs 100 to the offenders hardly serves any purpose. "For someone who can afford swanky cars, Rs 100 is minuscule. Hence, we had to think of other means to instill traffic sense in people," he maintained.

Also, Dr Singh has warned the vehicle owners to either think twice before venting their anger of gullible cops or be ready to face the music.

Credulous cops
> The job of a cop is the most thankless one.
> The salary he draws is less than that of a corporation sweeper.
> His stress involved in his job is very high.
> He is answerable for every thing happening in the society.
