The Navy's rapid search operation prevented a major catastrophe. representation pic | The terrorist attack by a fidayeen squad on South Mumbai's coastal belt on Wednesday was one of the worst attacks the city has ever witnessed. Not only did the attack catch the intelligence agencies off guard, it even broke the back of the highly-trained Anti-Terrorism Squad. However, a rapid operation by the Indian Navy prevented a major catastrophe in Mumbai.
Preliminary investigations have indicated that the fidayeen, estimated around 40, used a mother vessel to approach the Mumbai harbour, and later the squad landed at the Colaba sea front in a small craft called Gemini. They carried a huge cache of arms and ammunition before launching the attack that wreaked havoc in Mumbai.
The Navy launched a search operation in Mumbai harbour to hunt for the mother vessel. Naval spokesperson Captain M Nambiar confirmed that they had intercepted a suspicious vessel M V Alfa about 60 nautical miles off Mumbai. A search was underway till late in the evening, added Nambiar. |
