Nariman House residents awaiting clearance

Police clear the building of explosives; yet to give the go ahead

Even 30 hours after Nariman House was conquered by the National Security Guards, residents of the area are awaiting a nod from the authorities before they enter their respective houses as the authorities are clearing the building of explosives.

The residents of the area vacated their buildings on Wednesday night after they heard gunshots and explosions from the building. Nikesh Jain, who stays in front of Nariman house, along with his friends is still standing outside his locked door and has not been allowed to enter. "I could hear firing from behind my house, so I immediately ran and reached a safe spot. Since then, we have been out of our homes. I am waiting for the police to give me a clearance so I can go home," said Jain.

Hundreds of others, apart from Jain are still waiting to return to their homes. Kamlesh (name changed on
request) lives on the third floor of the building that shares the same compound wall as that of Nariman House.

"I heard a sound similar to a cylinder blast and asked everyone to vacate the building. From the window, I saw
people firing indiscriminately. I was   outside my house and there was dust everywhere," said Kamlesh.

Bharat Punamiya and Sunil Jain who stay near Nariman House also vacated their homes. They have now returned but can't enter their homes as they are filled with dust and dead rats. "We will clean our houses and then go to stay," said Punamiya.

Piyush Kumar, (name changed), who stays around 50 metres from Nariman House had to stay in the slums close by along with his family. "It didn't seem like I was in Mumbai. We were dependent on the slum dwellers for food and shelter and they helped us. You can see deep holes in the walls of our building. The impact was huge," added Kumar.
