Protesters outside the collector's office demand stern action against the culprits and adequate compensation for victims. pic/mandar tannu | Members of the Christian community under the banner of Catholic Association of Poona (CAP) staged a dharna outside the collector's office yesterday condemning the recent acts of violence against their fellow members in Orissa and the damage caused to churches in different states across India.
The protest was led by Bishop Valerian D'Souza who made an appeal to curb violence as soon as possible and protect the lives and properties of Christians in the states of Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
After staging a dharna in front of the collector's office, they submitted a memorandum to the collector demanding stern action against the culprits and adequate compensation for the affected people.
They also demanded a CBI inquiry be ordered to investigate the incidents in Orissa and their nexus to attacks on the Christian communities in other states.
CAP also demanded a high-level peace coordination committee comprising heads of all religions to work for peace in Karnataka and towards rehabilitation of the victims by providing immediate relief. |
