Stop it! Christians all over the country have been protesting the violence | The Crime Branch was yesterday handed over the case of the nun (29), who was allegedly raped during the Kandhamal violence, after the Orissa government faced flak for lax investigations. The alleged incident took place when a mob attacked a prayer hall in Kandhamal district where the nun worked, two days after VHP leader Laxmanananda Saraswati was killed.
"The nun gave a written complaint on August 25, alleging that she was raped by one person," sources said. She alleged they also paraded her naked on the streets, and that the incident occurred in the presence of a dozen policemen. Four persons were arrested and Inspector in-charge K N Rao from of Baliguda police station was suspended.
According to the medical report, there was no vaginal injury, but semen stains were found. CM Naveen Patnaik said stringent action would be taken against those who have committed the "shameful and savage" crime. A senior police officer said, "The nun and Pastor Thomas Chellam were assaulted by a mob. But allegation of rape had not been confirmed all these days."
Bhubaneshwar: Two people were killed by a Hindu mob in Kandhamal district yesterday despite the large police presence. |
