Pramil tried to slit Mukesh's throat

Pramil Shah's story should give an impetus to those activists who are against the practice of young Jain children taking diksha (renunciation). Shah was nine when he took diksha, 20 when he met the woman who would change his life forever, 24 when he gave up a sadhu's life, and now, at 25, he has been arrested for trying to kill the woman's husband.

On Wednesday, Pramil was arrested by the Surat police in Borivli for trying to slit the throat of his 37-year-old girlfriend's husband, so that they could start a life together.

After his arrest, Pramil, a Borivli resident, told the cops that he first met his girlfriend, Ramila Mehta, when she visited him at an ashram in Surat five years ago. Pramil was then called Prashamratnasuri Maharajsaheb.

'Ramila asked me to save her from her husband'

"At that time, she told me that her husband, Mukesh Mehta, used to beat her up and would regularly come home drunk. She wanted me to help her," said Pramil.

He didn't see her after that until last year. "That time Ramila came with both her children to an Ahmedabad ashram. She gave me a picture of her and her cellphone number before leaving. After that I couldn't concentrate on anything. I saw Ramila everywhere. After six months, I couldn't take it anymore and gave up on a sadhu's life."

Attacking husband

Pramil returned to his Borivli home, but soon left for Surat. There, he took up the job of a tailor's apprentice near Ramila's home. One day, when he brought up the idea of them living together, Ramila agreed even though that she was married. But she told Pramil, "People jump into fire for the one they love. And you can't get my husband out of the way?" So, on July 18, Pramil and two associates attacked Mukesh and tried to cut his throat. However, Mukesh survived.

The police suspected Pramil's role when they discovered that Ramila used to regularly call his number. "We arrested Pramil from Borivli and Ramila from Surat. They have confessed everything, but don't regret anything they've done," said Surat DCP V Chandrashekhar.
