How the police raided the pub, arrested culprits

By: Vinod Kumar Menon

When in Rome, do as the Romans do. That's exactly what the six policemen, including two female constables, did before raiding Sunday's rave party at Bombay 72° East, a disco in Juhu. To avoid any suspicion, the cops acted as revellers and paid Rs 700 as entry fee. Their biggest task was not to raise the bouncers' suspicion.

The cops, dressed in denims and T-shirts, and the lady constables, in full make-up and high heels, struggled with their dance movements for several hours before signalling their team waiting outside to raid the place. "We spotted young boys and girls dancing non-stop. Many of them were taking LSD drops," said assistant police inspector K K Pawar, who was part of the raid team. "We saw people sell a drop of LSD for Rs 1,000 outside the pub," added Pawar.

The police have arrested Gaurang, Kashi Lakhani and Amithosh for organising the trance party in connivance with the management of the disco. They had tipped customers 24 hours before the party by sending SMSes and e-mails. Apart from the Rs 700 entry fee, they charged Rs 1,000 each for drugs.

"We believe over 80 per cent of those detained will test positive for drugs. We will arrest them after receiving confirmation from Mumbai's Forensic Science Laboratory," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (ANC) Vishwas Nagre-Patil. Acting on a tip-off, Patil had visited a discotheque in Bandra on Friday. He tried to hide his identity by wearing a cap, but the bouncers got suspicious looking at his moustache and kept a close watch on him. Patil could do nothing and had to leave the place.
