Do you think the city has an abundant number of high rises, but not enough unique structures? If yes, the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) plans to change that soon.
It will construct several iconic buildings like CST, Air India building at Nariman Point and the Stock Exchange, at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC).
The idea came about when Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and MMRDA Commissioner Ratnakar Gaikwad were on a recent trip to London. "British architects suggested that we come up with buildings that would be symbolic of the city, instead of leasing out lands to private developers," said Gaikwad.
The MMRDA is already constructing a unique-looking seven-storey building at BKC.
The MMRDA plans to use 20 hectares of land in BKC which is lying vacant. "We can rent the buildings for commercial purposes and earn at least Rs 5,000 crore and continue to own the buildings," said an MMRDA official.
