US President George W Bush signed into law the Indo-US nuclear bill at the White House last night, marking a major foreign policy achievement for his administration.
The signing comes within a week of the Congress ratifying the United State-India Nuclear Co-operation Approval and Non-proliferation Enhan-cement Act.
Enhancement of the act, which was followed by the signing of the 123 Agreement between India and the US, will end decades of nuclear isolation of India and open for it the door of civilian nuclear cooperation between India and the United States.
India to sign
The Indo-US 123 Agreement, to operationalise the nuclear deal, could not be signed last week during US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice's visit to New Delhi, as India insisted it would do so only after seeing Bush's signing statement. India wants Bush to clarify matters such as US fuel supply assurances. |
