Arrested techie is an email expert

By: Imran Gowhar

Asghar Peerbhoy (31), nabbed by the Mumbai Anti-Terror Squad for sending terror emails in the name of Indian Mujahideen, is an expert in developing software for corporate emailing.

Peerbhoy used to work for Zimbra Technology in Pune, which used to develop programming for mails. Yahoo acquired the company a year and a half ago. He became a principal software engineer with Yahoo, with a salary of Rs 19 lakh a year.

Peerbhoy was well versed in email technology, and knew hacking and manipulation, a source told MiD DAY.

Since Peerbhoy was in touch with Riyaz Bhatkal, the suspected mastermind behind the recent serial blasts, he was reportedly assigned the job of hacking into wi-fi networks and sending mail to the police.

Peerbhoy's job was to get data from his associates and send mail to the police via the media after hacking into wi-fi networks.

Highly educated and with an affluent background, he was committed to the Indian Mujahideen and aware of the implications, a police source said.

No regrets

Peerbhoy, who is now in the custody of Mumbai police, does not regret his actions. "He has no regrets or remorse about his actions, and admits being a part of the group," said a senior police officer in Bangalore.

Yahoo officials said they would extend all cooperation for the investigations.
