A BEST driver, ferrying a bus full of passengers was caught for breaking a signal at the Shimpoli Naka junction at 2 pm this afternoon. On further inspection, the RTO official who hailed down the bus for the offence found that the driver was reeking of alcohol.
RTO head constable JJ Shinde told MiD DAY that the bus was full of passengers and the driver Ashok Sawle, broke the signal without paying any heed to pedestrians. "I confiscated his license which was expired and when I was taking down other details, I noticed that his breath smelled of alcohol. We are now taking him to the police station for a breathalyzer test," he said. The bus, no 203, was from Poisar depot and the bus shuttles between Dahisar and Juhu.
Nitul Shantilal Chauhan, (36), an eyewitness said that passengers were visibly shaken when they were asked to get off the bus. "The driver could have had a bad accident, as he was both drunk and driving without a license."
BEST public relations officer A Tamboli said that he was unaware of the development. "We will take the appropriate action after investigations are completed,"he said.
The latest update on the same is that the BEST driver found drunk breathanalyzer tests on Ashok Sawle (Driver) have returned positive confirming that he was drunk while driving. Police officials also told MiD DAY that Sawle had earlier been booked for breaking a signal. "His license was still in the RTO office and he hadn't bothered collecting it," said an officer. |
