Samee gets clean chit

Bangalore:

Innocent Supporter: Abdul Samee

Abdul Samee's narco analysis has given police substantial leads to more members in the  SIMI network and helped him earn a clean chit.

City police had arrested Samee as a terror suspect in the serial blasts that rocked Bangalore on July 25.

Samee told investigators that he visited Bangalore a few days before the blasts to collect geographical details about some places including the Forum Mall in Koramangala.

He told the police his mentor, Tauqeer, had asked for the details but he had no idea why he wanted them.

He stayed at a classmate's house in Bangalore to do his research. He left to meet his brother in Pune on the day of the blasts.

Samee told the police he joined SIMI before it was banned. "I thought the ban would be lifted after a while. I wanted to do something for SIMI since I was impressed by its ideology," he told the police.

Impressive worker

He organised meetings in Belgaum with the former activists to discuss ideologies and future plans. This impressed SIMI mentors Tauqeer and Adnan who then entrusted Samee with more responsibilities.

"They asked me to collect emails and phone numbers of SIMI members who went underground after the ban. I managed to collect their details and gave them to Tauqeer," Samee told the police.

"We are keeping a close watch on them," said police officials.

Police believe Samee unknowingly provided logistic support for the blasts. So they have ruled out his direct involvement in the blast and instead booked him under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act 1967.

Missed Tauqeer?

The special invesigation team which was shadowing Samee for some days before he was picked up, could have caught Tauqeer if they waited a few more days.

A senior police officer told MiD DAY that Tauqeer, who was hoodwinking the police from Indore, was supposed to meet Samee in Bijapur to give him further instructions.

But Tauqeer went into hiding after he heard of Samee's arrest.

"If we had waited and watched the movements of Samee for a few more days, we could have caught Tauqeer too," rued the senior police official.
