A 37-year-old lady doctor from AIIMS allegedly jumped into the Yamuna River from the DND Flyway late on Sunday night. The Noida-based victim, Reeta, was an eye surgeon at AIIMS.

According an autorickshaw driver, who was an eyewitness to the incident, before jumping into the river, Reeta banged her speeding Maruti car twice against the DND's side railings. He informed the police at around 10 pm.

Talking to MiD DAY, the autorickshaw driver said, "The car was coming from Noida and just after crossing the toll plaza, it banged into the side railings. As the car was being driven very fast, it bounced on the road. Then the car stopped and a lady jumped out of it. She crossed the footpath and climbed onto the iron railings. Then she jumped into the water. Everything happened so fast I didn't get time to react. And as it was dark, I couldn't even see her in the water."

'Doc had a disturbed married life'

Reeta's family members, who were following her in another car, informed that her brother had expired last week and she was upset. Besides, the doctor had a disturbed married life as well and she used to have regular quarrels with her husband. One of her brothers said, "Today too she had an argument with her husband. When we had called him up earlier in the day to talk to Geeta, he refused to hand the phone over to her."

A senior police official said, "We are yet to recover the body as it's difficult to carry out search operations at night. With the help of divers we will carry out a full-fledged operation in the morning."

Meanwhile, the doctor's family got into a brawl with media representatives at the spot. They allegedly even hit out at a few TV crews. Though the "injured" journalists wanted the police to take action immediately, they had to approach the Delhi Police commissioner as the police refused to treat their case seriously. A case has been registered against Reeta's family in this regard.

Meanwhile, till the time of going to press, Reeta's dead body had not been recovered. And only one cop stood guard at the accident spot in the morning.
