Sarnobat Rahi | Chief coach of India's shooting contingent for the Commonwealth Youth Games, Deep Bhatia believes 17-year-old Sarnobat Rahi, who won gold in the 25m pistol event yesterday, is meant for bigger things.
"She has this uncanny knack of doing well in the final rounds of her competitions, which speaks volumes of her ability to handle pressure," Bhatia told MiD DAY.
Rahi was tied with Malaysia's Sazana Binti with 550 points while entering the final round. However, the Kolhapur girl proved her coach right as she shot an impressive 198.1 points in the final (748.1 overall) to comfortably beat Binti, who only managed 192.9 (overall 742.9). "It's been great to come here and get gold, especially because this is the first time the CYG is being held India," Rahi said.
Rahi has done well this year not only in India but also abroad. In Germany in May this year, she was the champion of champions, which is a fantastic achievement for a girl of her age.
"I would have been disappointed had she not won gold here," said Bhatia.
"If she continues her rhythm and maintains her focus, and of course we give her more international exposure, then she should not only do well in the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in 2010, but should also easily make it to the London 2012 shooting squad," said Bhatia.
