Approximately 800 Jet employees are expected to receive their termination letters today. Even with such lay-offs, the airlines has only sacked Indians and recruits from foreign countries, who are paid a higher salary compared to their Indian counterparts.

The top brass of Jet Airways was called for a special meeting last night. They discussed how to handle the repercussions of their decision to lay off their employees. Ragini Chopra, vice president, corporate communications and PR, Jet Airways (I) Ltd, said she could not comment on the issue, as she was busy in a meeting. However, in a statement released to the press, she stated, "Jet Airways expects difficult market conditions to continue for some time.  As a consequence, personnel hired for expansion, probationers and unconfirmed personnel (who have been recently hired) will have to be released."

HR experts say

Rita Verma, GM, Leadership, Learning and Change, Mudra Communications, said, "The Jet Airways HR could've handled the situation in a better way. They should've taken the staff into confidence."

Adil Mallya, group president, HR, Essar Group, said, "I do not want to comment on the dealings of the Jet Airways HR, but there is a need for absolute sensitivity towards individuals in such cases."
