Internet giant Google is all set to spread its wings in voice-based information search in Delhi. Cashing in on the millions of low cost mobile users who do not use the Internet to search for information, Google has recently launched a voice-based helpline number to help you to find a local restaurant or taxi service.
The Google service is similar to Just Dial's but comes free of cost. Consumers have to call up a toll-free number from either a landline or mobile and request for the information they need. Google either delivers the information through an SMS or provides it you instantly. With stringent privacy settings, Google claims it will provide information on flight schedules and movie shows as well.
The search giant, however, is not planning to set up a big call centre, as it wants to make the process completely automated. A Google spokesperson said, "We are collecting voice samples to strengthen our voice recognition process.
We are building and experimenting with voice recognition tools so that we can deliver value and correct information to the users. In Delhi, the service would be available in English and Hindi."
Though Google is not advertising and marketing this service at present, the company believes the word of the mouth will attract more customers. The same strategy was successful for them in Hyderabad where they launched a similar service six months ago.
