BPCL installs GPS devices to track oil tankers

By: Aditya Anand

Mumbai-based oil companies are devising plans to prevent theft and adulteration of fuel.

On Friday, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) became the first among oil companies to fit its 5,200 tankers with global positioning system (GPS) devices.

BPCL has installed its tankers with a vehicle mounting unit (VMU), which is a small unit consisting of a GPS receiver and general packet radio service (GPRS) communications module. "The GPS uses multiple satellites to gather details of every tanker to calculate the location to an accuracy of up to 5 m in Mumbai," officials said.

"Till now, tracking tankers was a serious issue. There were times when they deviated from the actual route or
drivers took a break. We were clueless about the tankers till they reached their destination," said BPCL's executive director (logistics) retail Anurag Deepak.
