Thanks to the extensive combing operations that followed after the Ahmedabad blasts on July 26, where cars stolen from Mumbai were used, motor vehicle thefts have dropped substantially in the last three months.
Motor vehicle thefts that had risen from 294 in January this year to 438 in July dropped to 323 in August.
That, of course, is no consolation to filmmaker Rohan Sippy, whose brand new Pajero disappeared from the compound of his housing society near Mehboob studio in Bandra on October 16.
"My car was parked in the compound of my building.
I have yet to hear of any breakthrough in the case," said Sippy.
Though Senior Inspector Prakash George of the Bandra police acknowledged that they were yet to make any arrests in the case, he pointed out that car thefts had decreased in the past few months.
Many nabbed
ACP (crime) Deven Bharti echoed this, saying, "The combing after the Ahmedabad blasts has resulted in a steep decline in the number of vehicle thefts, especially after our special squads nabbed several groups of car thieves."
Other crimes too
Besides, vehicle thefts, police operations have also led to decrease of other crimes like murder, rape and extortion.
While crime figures peaked to over 2,800 for most of the months this year, it dipped to 2,584 in August after the blasts.
