What's your face value?

By: Savie Karnel

Social networking sites are now being scanned by recruiters, and this can either make or mar your chances of getting a job.

These sites are part of the digital strategies used by companies and proven to be effective too.

"Last year, Ernst and Young got 25 per cent of its new college recruits from Facebook. It's a huge number," said Jerome Nadel, chief experience officer, Human Factors International, at a seminar on digital strategy.

Social networking sites help in cross-checking if the person is the same as he or she describes himself in the resume.

True picture?

"It helps in referential checks. They show what you are," he said.

"This may include the comments you post and also the blogs you write."

Some companies also create communities or forums to know the opinions about their products and also to know the consumers' expectations.

Consumer needs

"Proctor and Gamble is one such company that is using this strategy to know what women want. Other companies too are using it to learn what consumers need."

"If you can't make them like you, be like them," he said.

"Out of the money spent on IT in the last 10 years, it is business intelligence that is No 1," he said.

The scanning by the intelligence includes tagging, chats, notes, previous actions, comments, communities, blogs and wikis.

Oceans of info

The content generated by internet users everyday is massive and gives a lot of insight into their needs.

"About 90,000 blogs are created per day, 1 lakh videos are uploaded a day and millions of gestures such as searching, clicking and tagging is done daily."

"In addition to this, hundreds of articles and videos are published on the web every day."

Many invisible computers are connected to the internet such as your mobile phone, i-pod, MP3 players, and camera," Jerome said.
