| Risky: Such scenes weren't seen yesterday. file pic | The MNS rampage affected the Marathi Manoos they claim to fight for. Mumbai's ubiquitous dabbawallas, most of whom are Maharashtrian, were yesterday forced to stop working - a phenomenon that almost never takes place.
Scared that they too would be harmed in the violence, the dabbawallas' association decided that they wouldn't deliver food. "Why should we take the risk? Who will take the responsibility if anything happens to our dabbawallas?" said Raghunath Medge, president of the Nutan Tiffin Suppliers Association, the largest dabbawalla association in the city.
In 1993
The last time the dabbawallas weren't out on the streets was during the 1993 riots.
Hitul Savla, a share broker from Nariman Point who has been using the dabba service for three-and-a-half years, said, "I got a call from home yesterday saying I wouldn't be getting food. The dabbawallas who reach my house at 9.30 am didn't arrive till 11.30 am."
Shriram Sharma from Andheri added, "I waited for my dabba till 1 pm. After that I went out for lunch."
