Raat bhar ghar ki yaad ati rahi

By: Vinod Kumar Menon and Kranti Vibhute

Raj Shrikant Thackeray returned much like a conquering warrior to his Shivaji Park home at 5.45 pm yesterday, exactly 24 hours after he was hauled off to the Manpada police station in Dombivli. For his mother, it was a wonderful way to begin her birthday celebrations.

As for Raj, we can safely say, the homecoming meant, he could finally take a bath. After all, the 19 hours, 45 minutes, he spent in the police lock up were hardly pleasant.

"Raj was already very exhausted after his public meetings at Chiplun in Ratnagiri on Monday. He was then taken into custody at 2.40 am that night and brought to the Bandra Kurla Complex police station," said an MNS supporter.

'Toh chimni sarkha khato!'

From there, he was taken to the Manpada police station in a white Tavera at 5.45 pm and led to his 10 X 10 room (not a cell). A cop who wanted to remain anonymous said, "He declined offers of tea and coffee and proclaimed he would not eat dinner provided by the police station. When his wife Sharmila brought him his dinner at 9 pm, he did eat, but very little." Watching him then, another police officer told us, "Toh chimni sarkha khato!"

And after dinner? It was bedtime for the MNS boss, who wore the same white kurta pyjamas he was arrested in. He was given a mattress, without a pillow. "The room is dimly lit by a bulb and doesn't have a fan. His only luxury was the mosquito repellant coil and the attached toilet," the officer said.

Shuteye was at 11.30 pm and he woke up at 10 am.

"He did drink some tea, but did not take a bath," said an officer, and added, "He refused breakfast and lunched at 1.30 pm shortly after he was taken to the Kalyan court.
