Bangalore: Jayanagar police have arrested a conman who used to befriend girls and later blackmail them.
The accused was arrested on a tip-off while he was trying to dispose of the gold valuables.
Investigation revealed that Somashekhar, alias Surya, had taken away the gold chains from two girls and threatened to expose their 'affairs' to their families.
His modus operandi has surprised the police. They verified the facts with Nalini Kumari, a student of a city-based college. She not only confirmed that she had been cheated, but also filed a complaint against him.
Kumari said she met Surya a couple of months back, in true filmy style. While she was crossing the road, Surya who was riding pillion, brushed her and sped away. The next day, he was waiting for her at the same spot.
When she came out of the college, he stopped her to apoligise. Surya introduced himself as an employee of a private firm and apologised for the previous day's incident.
He continued to meet her and soon they became friends. He gathered personal details about her through their regular SMS exchange.
Later, he started harassing her, threatening to tell her parents about the 'affair'. As she pleaded with him, he demanded her gold chain. She promptly gave it to him, after which he just vanished.
Surya had also befriended Manjushree, a sales person at a two-wheeler showroom in Rajajinagar. He took away her gold chain in a similar fashion.
According to the police, Surya was unemployed and was in bad company. He was involved in anti-social activities.
