SMASHED: The damaged Toyota Corolla after a slab from the building of Consulate of Czech Republic fell through it. PIC/SHASHANK RAO | Worli resident Maitreyi Hattangadi was driving down Peddar Road yesterday afternoon, happily anticipating moving into her new home, when a huge concrete slab fell through her car roof.
Hattangadi, who escaped with minor injuries, was a victim of the collapse of a part of the building of the Consulate of Czech Republic. While one part of the roof of the four-storeyed building, opposite Lata Mangeshkar's house, fell on her Toyota Corolla, another chunk shattered the windscreen of a Traffic Police patrol vehicle. Both vehicles were moving at a snail's pace due to a traffic jam.
Hattangadi was rushing home to Worli from Kemps Corner, as the movers and packers had arrived to help her family move into their new home at Prabhadevi. "My first thought was that it was a bomb blast. I soon realised that a slab from the Czech consulate building had collapsed," said a shaken Hattangadi.
The slab ripped through the car roof and a portion of it fell on her lap. Glass pieces from the shattered rear window of her car injured her back and neck. None of the occupants of the second vehicle were injured.
Added Hattangadi, "The Counsel General comforted me and explained that the neighbouring building was undergoing repairs, which shook the 70-year-old Consulate building."
When asked about the incident, Zdenek Stebetak, vice counsel, Consulate of Czech Republic, said he learnt of it only in the evening. MiD DAY also emailed the Consulate asking them about the condition of their building, but didn't receive any reply. |
