The Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Auth-ority (MMRDA) has assured the Bombay High Court that it will start work on the Grant Road and Dadar skywalks only after solving the problems faced by locals. The assurance was given when the case filed by the Federation of Retail Traders Welfare Association (FRTWA), challenging the construction of these skywalks, came up in the HC.
Last week, the MMRDA had called for suggestions from locals on the proposed skywalks to avoid opposition.
Metropolitan Commissioner Ratnakar Gaikwad had said, "The problems faced by locals will be sorted out."
The designs of both these skywalks are already done and MMRDA has also decided on the colours.
While this matter has been adjourned to November 27, the MMRDA, is confident of starting work on the other skywalks within a fortnight. Although the agency has not received any construction bids so far, it has got some proposals from private parties.
Dilip Kawatkar, spokesperson, MMRDA, said, "The executive committee of MMRDA had approved 22 skywalks on October 16 and work will begin after finalising the contractor. Construction of the Dadar and Grant Road skywalks has not been approved"
The objections
> The skywalk at Grant Road would escalate traffic and make entry of fire engines and ambulances difficult > Residents of Ranade Road and M C Jawale Marg, Dadar, say the skywalk would affect their privacy |
