A day isn't enough to get your bearings in Mumbai. Which is probably why Rahul Raj Singh (25) from Bihar headed to Saki Naki from his hotel in Teli galli, Andheri (E), instead of Shivaji Park, Dadar, his intended target, Raj Thackeray's home. Police investigations have indicated that Singh left the Imperial Hotel where he was staying and wanted to go to Dadar, but accidentally landed at Saki Naka around 8.45 am. There, a helpful Mumbaikar advised him to board a bus to Kurla railway station and then take a train to Dadar.
'Assassin did not know the city'
It was aboard the double decker bus plying on route number 332, that Singh went berserk, hijacked the bus, shot a passenger and was finally killed by the police.
Said Additional Commissioner of Police Sadanand Date, under whose jurisdiction the encounter took place, "The assassin did not know the city, which is why he took a detour to Kurla." Another senior officer added, "Had he known the route to Dadar, he would have gone there and waited for Raj Thackeray at Shivaji Park." Police sources added that it would have been difficult to spot Singh had he taken a direct route to Dadar. He could have easily melted in the crowd and got within striking distance of Thacke-ray after his meet and greet agenda.
Upper deck mystery
According to police sources, there is another interesting theory about why Singh prematurely pulled out the revolver and hijacked the bus.
The senior police officer pointed out that when Singh climbed on the upper deck of the bus, he was shocked to see there was no driver and that could have probably unhinged him. This, compounded with the fact that he was carrying a loaded gun, made him veer off from his original plan.
Why did killer head to Kurla?
