Mumbai:

The potholed road, which lies towards the northern end of Linking Road and moves on to meet the S V Road near Milan Mall

Over a month after MiD DAY reported the sorry state of a road riddled with 738 potholes (we had actually counted them all) in Santacruz (W), the BMC has started repairing the 500-m stretch.

The main road, which lies towards the northern end of Linking Road and moves on to meet the S V Road near Milan Mall, had potholes of various shapes and sizes.

Assistant Engineer Jamdhotkar of H/West Ward stated that the road was supposed to have been repaired by a developer. "Since the developer was not doing his job, we took over the responsibility," added Jamdhotkar.

But for resident Anirudh Limay, the action comes a little too late. He questioned why residents were being made to suffer in the blame game between the BMC and the developer. "If the developer has erred, the civic authorities must book him for negligence.

It is their duty to ensure pothole-free roads in the city," said Limay.

Resident Swapnil Kalghatgi said the repaired road would be a blessing for sore backs. Dr Vasant Shenoy, who practices in the area, had told MiD DAY that he had been flooded with patients complaining about backaches and slip discs because of the potholed-road.

However, Kalghatgi wondered why tar is being used on the surface when the adjoining roads are concretised. "I just hope this is not an eyewash. I hope the road does not erode within days, leaving behind the same potholes," he said.
