Symonds' selection will be on cricketing merit, says selector Cox

BANGALORE: If at all you needed further proof of Cricket Australia's professionalism, selector Jamie Cox provided it yesterday.

The Australian team was quite upset with Andrew Symonds' decision to go fishing rather than attend a team meeting. He was sent home from Darwin where Australia were hosting Bangladesh in an ODI.

But Cox, who is in Bangalore with the Australia A team, said the Symonds' issue would have no bearing on his selection and he could be picked for the tour to India if he makes himself available for selection.

"As far as selection is concerned Andrew is up for it when he makes himself available. The decision (to send him back) was made by the senior player group in support of Cricket Australia. And from a selection point of view, we hope Andrew is quickly back to cricket," Cox said, adding that it is possible Symonds might not be picked when he makes himself available.

"As of now, Andrew has been given time to sort things out. But we will make a decision (about his selection) when that time comes. The decision to pick or not pick him will surely be cricketing. It will have nothing to with whatever has happened recently," Cox added.
