This should come as a huge relief to pedestrians and motorists alike. After taking stringent action against motorists in the city for rash and drunk driving, traffic cops are now planning to undertake a drive against BEST bus drivers. Since April, 20 people have died in BEST-related accidents.

One person who will be pleased by this drive is Eknath Dhumal (45), who fractured his leg when a BEST bus hit him at Marol in Andheri (E) in February. While two others died, he was hospitalised for over a month. "BEST drivers think they own the roads," he said.

Jawahar Gyanchandani from Ulhasnagar, who was also injured in the accident, said he gets scared every time he sees a BEST bus now.

"There have been several complaints against BEST drivers for rash driving. We have sent a letter to all the BEST bus depots and bus stations to ensure they drive safely. If they don't take this letter seriously, we will take strict action against them," said a senior traffic official. "If the same driver is caught repeatedly, he may have to lose his license permanently," added the official.

Pravin Chheda, chairman of the BEST Committee, said, "We have already instructed our drivers to follow the traffic norms. We have also given courses for our drivers so that they drive safely."

On an average, a BEST driver works for 8 hours a day.

However, when asked about the drive Sanjay Barve, Jt CP (Traffic) was reluctant to comment. "So, what is so special about it? Whatever there was to say is there in the letter," he snapped and hung up.
