Five held for cloning mobile phone

Delhi: The Delhi police crime branch sleuths busted a phone-cloning racket and arrested five people for allegedly cloning CDMA phones.

The police have seized 33 cloned CDMA sets, computers and CDs from the accused. The five -Mohammad Arif (29), Ashwani Tiwari (30), Amir Ali (24), Shashad (26) and Amjad Khan (25) - were involved in several cases of mobile cloning.

The crime branch after receiving a complaint from a telecom company about cloning, first identified the numbers then zeroed in the gang.

The police said that Arif was the mastermind behind the racket. "He bought the software two years ago from an associate and started cloning sets," police said.

"Tiwari, a recovery agent later joined Arif and started providing ESN (Electronic Serial Number) of the sets," the cop said.

Then Arif sold the software to his friend Ali for Rs 10,000. The gang then charged Rs 800 - to Rs 1,000 for providing a bill free cloned phone.

The accused used to sell these cloned hones to STD booths. Shashad, accused and the brother of Ali, and Amjad Khan, another accused, owned a PCO shop.
