Pune:

The city's traffic police have taken action against over 500 Puneites including a major chunk of college going students, for violating the basic traffic norms. Those booked are from 68 colleges across the city, as well as from companies like Telco, Wipro and Infosys. There are also a few who belong to government establishments.

"People riding two-wheelers lack a sense of basic traffic rules. The situation then culminates in to major traffic congestions at many places in the city," said Manoj Patil, DCP, traffic branch. "Breaking traffic signals, overtaking from the wrong side and parking in no-parking zones are some of the charges levied upon them," Patil added

"Thirty five students from Wadia College, while 22, 16, 39, 19, 30 and 26 students from Fergusson College, Poona College, Bharati Vidyapeeth, MIT College, Symbiosis College and S P College have been booked respectively," Patil informed. Adding further he said, "There are 67 girls amongst all who have also been charged with violation of traffic rules."

Patil also urged the college authorities to display the names of erring students on their notice boards, which will teach them a lesson and refrain others form making the same mistake. "This will automatically help in streamlining traffic condition in the city," he said.
