Upset over the demolition of a temple here, an ethnic Indian party today accused an opposition-run state government of failing to issue written instructions to local councils to not demolish Hindu shrines.
If instructions have been issued "We want the state government to make it public so that it will be in tandem with the opposition's promise during the last general election that it will not demolish any temples," Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) President Samy Vellu said in a statement.
He felt the Sri Maha Kaliamman temple in Ampang in Selangor state would not have been demolished earlier this month if there was a written instruction from the state government controlled by the opposition.
Vellu said the temple was demolished just 48 days before the Hindus celebrated Diwali.
He alleged that the opposition had taken the Indian minority in the country for a ride with their promises during the last general election that no temples would be demolished.
