Honchos take to flight pooling

Saves fuel and operation costs, reduces air traffic congestion

Thanks to the slowdown, Pune's corporate honchos are increasingly taking to flight pooling to fly between Mumbai and Pune.

The concept, like car pooling, allows corporate bosses to save fuel and operation costs and reduce (air) traffic congestion.

Pune and its environs have 21 helipads owned by business groups like Bharat Forge, KOEL and Poonawala. "With the economy in downturn, it makes sound financial sense to pool flights like one pools cars.

Most top executives, who would earlier book a chopper or airplane all for themselves, are now sharing flights with others," said Ameya Gore, a spokesperson of Airnetz Aviation, a Navi Mumbai-based company that provides airplanes and helicopters on hire.

Meanwhile, private aviation companies are earning as much as Rs 5 lakh a day from ferrying leaders of major political parties.

Many airplanes have been booked for an entire month by some parties.
