vacate the school building yesterday, after a man called them earlier in the day, and informed them about a bomb planted in the school.

"We swung into action after the caller, who spoke in rapid Hindi, told us about the bomb. However, after searching the school premises for three hours, we realised it was a hoax call," said constable Nandakumar Alhat of the Kondwa police station.

School authorities, however, claim that the exercise, during which two panicked boys and a girl fainted, was merely a disaster management drill.  "We completed the disaster management drill under the police's supervision in seven minutes flat, as we can't take a chance with 2,700 kids involved," said Neelam Chakaravarty, principal of the school.

Ishaan Lahiri (14), a student of standard 9, said, "We were asked to assemble for a drill. We were asked to march to the gate and leave for home, keeping our bags behind. We made fun about it till we saw the police vans outside the gate. That scared us."
