Phones at most police stations in the city don't have caller IDs
It's not possible to trace mischief mongers who make hoax calls to Pune's police stations because the phones do not have caller IDs installed.
On Thursday, the Kondhwa police station was left with no option but to evacuate the DPS school in Mohammedwadi of all students and staff after they received an anonymous bomb hoax call. Till date, the police have no clue who the caller was as the police station did not have caller IDs that were subsequently installed.
The number of such calls peaked following 26/11. On December 1, last year, the police received 40 hoax calls during the day. Predictably, the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad had no option but to take every call seriously and comb all important locations in the city.
Jt C P Rajendra Sonwane said that he did not know how many police stations have caller IDs on their phones. "Such calls are made mostly to the control room, the nerve centre of all police stations, which does have this facility," said Sonwane. He also added that hoax callers could attract action under IPC Sections 504, 505, and 506. |
