Shakti, the 5 year old hippopotamus at Byculla Zoo died on Thursday night.
Dr Sanjay Tripathi, veterinary officer at the Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan said that the hippo hadn't eaten last night. "We only discovered that he was dead this morning," said Tripathi.
There are currently four hippos at the zoo, three that are female and one male. Sources said that the hippo is believed to have passed away due to the extreme heat but officials refused to comment on the same.
"The hippo's body has been sent for post mortem. We will only ascertain the cause of death following that," said Tripathi. |
