Wanted man takes on 3 cops, beats them black and blue

Constables return to police station in torn uniforms to file complaint against man they could not arrest

Three constables from Cottonpet Police Station went to arrest Ayaz Chaudhary (30), who is accused of extortion and attempt to murder, on Monday. The three, Murthy R, Santosh Kumar and Srinivas, came back with nothing to show for their efforts but torn uniforms and bruises on their bodies.

Chaudhary humiliated the policemen by thrashing them in public before escaping.

All that the stunned constables, who sources said  were beaten black and blue, could do was file a complaint against Chaudhary in their own police station about 30 minutes later.

Inspector Gopala K P of the Cottonpet police station had received a tip-off on Monday that Chaudhary, who had been absconding for two months, was visiting his family on Bakri Eid. That is when he sent three of his constables to catch the wanted man.

Manhunt launched

Following Murthy R's complaint, the Cottonpet police charged Chaudhary with assaulting or using criminal force to deter public servant from discharging his duty under Section 353 of the Indian Penal Code. A manhunt has been launched for Chaudhary.

"We surrounded him near his house but he overpowered us and beat us up," Murthy said in his complaint.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (West)  B Shivakumar, denied  Chaudhary had beaten up the cops. "Chaudhary slipped away while being escorted to the station, and in the melee the police constables probably sustained some injuries," he said. "Chaudhary is just another local goon. Whatever it takes, we will arrest him at the earliest."
