Newly-opened airport flyover shut for repair work

By: Shashank Rao

The domestic airport flyover was opened with pompous arrangements and ribbon-cutting ceremony two days before the deadline on January 24.

However, the first three lanes of the same flyover that was  inaugurated six months back lies in improper state with uneven roads marring the entire stretch.

Now, the Maharashtra State Road  Development Corporation (MSRDC) has closed down this side of the  flyover between 12 midnight till 6 am for repair and leveling works.

The vehicular traffic, which otherwise shouldnâ?Tt be affected once a flyover is opened for traffic, wouldnâ?Tt be able to drive for the next  eight days.

An official from Public Works Department working at the spot said, "We had to open the other side of the flyover by January 24 and so could not complete the levelling on time."

They have put  up barricades at the start of the flyover to prevent vehicles from  entering at this stipulated time.

Even MSRDC officials agreed that the pressure to complete the second portion of the flyover lead to this uneven road. Presently a layer of mastic asphalt is being laid on the 20 metres stretch of the flyover.

The Domestic Airport flyover is around 714 metres and has been built at a cost of Rs 34 crore.
