An alert shopkeeper helped the police arrest a conman who was extracting money impersonating as a commercial tax officer.
The accused, Murali(48) from Tumkur, was handed over to SJP Road police. When Murali approached Srichand Chawla, owner of Universal Electronics on SP road, to check the shop's accounts, Chawla demanded his ID-card since Murali claimed to be from the commercial tax department. Since Murali failed to produce his ID-Card, Chawla called up the Commissioner of CTC and found out that Murali was a fraud. The official asked Chawla to detain him till they reached the spot. Chawla caught Murali with the help of his staff. He was later handed over to the CTC squad, who in turn, gave him to the SJP police who filed a cheating complaint against him. Preliminary invesitgations have revealed that Murali was unemployed and had cheated many shops earlier impersonating as a CTC officer. In fact, he had taken Rs 1,500 from Chawla six months ago on the pretext of checking his shop, the police said. Police are try to ascertain whether Murali is part of a bigger racket .
