Police will order robots to fight terrorism

By: J Dey

Mumbai police's shopping list for high-tech gadgets to be used in their fight against terror, includes robots.
While confirming that robots were indeed being requisitioned, senior officers at the police headquarters refused to elaborate how the robots will be used in the fight against terror.

Other gadgets requisitioned by the Mumbai police include mobile X-ray scanners for Rs 1 crore each that can detect explosives within a one-kilometre radius, and total container vehicles, that can be used to transport quick response teams safely to an area of operation, like armoured carriers used by the army.

The cops have also requisitioned mobile jammers, so  terrorists can be stopped from talking to their handlers overseas. Other requirements include firing simulator systems, digital video cameras, bulletproof helmets and jackets.

Bulletproof jackets with the Mumbai police have been found to be substandard, and have been cited as one of the reasons, which led to the death of several policemen, including ATS chief Hemant Karkare.

Mumbai police is also considering buying a non-linear junction detector, an instrument used to detect an improvised explosive, which is expected to relieve some of the load on heavily overworked police dogs.

The police are also considering replacing x-ray machines with bomb detection and disposal squads following the 26/11 attacks.

The cops' wish list
> X-ray scanners that can detect explosives within a one-kilometre radius
> Total container vehicles, used to transport quick response teams
> Mobile jammers
> Firing simulator systems
> Digital video cameras
> Bulletproof helmets
> Bulletproof jackets
