The fraud in the allotment of houses in the DDA Housing Scheme, 2008, may not just be limited to the reserved category. Sources in the Economic Offences Wing, who are investigating the case, told MiD DAY that the scam was wider and they have leads pointing towards the fraud in the general category also.

The source also added that a private bank employee also played an important role in the scam. "We are not ruling out the fraud in the general category. We are investigating from all possible angles and there are people who are under our scanner," said S B K Singh, Additional Commissioner of Police, Economic Offences Wing. He said that the racket could be connected to many other states apart from Rajasthan.

"The arrests so far are only a small cog in the wheel. The investigation may throw some surprises," the source added. The DDA scheme was launched on August 3, 2008. More than 12 lakh applications were received for 5,238 flats, which were to be allotted by a draw of lots on December 16.

Soon allegations of fraud surfaced pertaining mostly to the allotment of 25 per cent of the flats reserved for those belonging to scheduled castes and scheduled tribes, war widows and those physically challenged.

The authority and the bank appointed by it to act on its behalf were accused of not scrutinising the application forms adequately.
